Survey for Parents

Discussing alcohol issues with teens is much more effective if you approach the conversation with a certain attitude, and background knowledge. Your answers on this survey will help you explore this site, and find the information you need to speak confidently.

Please make sure you have selected an answer for all five questions.

  1. How would you define “binge drinking?”
    • 3 drinks in a row
    • 4 drinks in a row
    • 5 or more drinks in a row
  2. Where would you say Colorado ranks nationally in terms of how often teens binge drink (1 being the most often, 50 being the least often)?
    • 15th in the nation
    • 31st in the nation
    • 9th in the nation
  3. What kind of legal punishments do you think exist when authorities find teens either drinking or possessing alcohol?
    • None. However, law enforcement would notify the child’s parent or guardian and let them deal with it at home.
    • A small fine. Teens are issued a $50 ticket which must be paid.
    • A criminal summons. Teens caught with alcohol must go to court, pay a fine of up to $250, and likely perform community service.
  4. Which of the following situations do you think could result in criminal charges for you or your child:
    • Your child is drinking at a friend’s house without your consent, but with the approval of that friend’s parents.
    • Your teen is pulled over after having one drink, and registers a .02 BAC on a breathalyzer.
    • You are hosting a backyard cookout and allow a few of your child’s friends to drink alcohol even though their parents are not at the gathering.
    • Your teen gets a fake ID made and has it confiscated when trying to use it.
    • All of the above
  5. What steps do you feel you could confidently take if you believed your teen was becoming a high-risk drinker:
    • Ground him/her. Don’t give him/her the chance to drink.
    • Parental lecture. Let my child know his/her behavior is unacceptable, dangerous and must change now.
    • Make a plan. Discuss with my child what is prompting the frequent alcohol use and then brainstorm ways to change his/her behavior.
